Sausburg handbags
Peggy Airey-Van Diem grew up in a creative family in the Netherlands where design and crafts were basically spoon fed. At an early age Peggy learned how to use the sewing machine and made her first bag in grade school. After high school, she studied at the Academy of Industrial Design. Although she was initially interested in furniture design, she often got involved in mom’s clothing and costume projects.
After moving to California, Peggy’s design interest shifted and she started working as a graphic designer, occasionally designing jewelry and bags on the side.
To compliment her mom’s clothing collection in the Netherlands, she designed a few handbags just for fun. They were an instant hit and Peggy has since then shifted from graphic design to designing and making handbags.
Inspiration for designs come from many objects in daily life; anything from milk cartons, to thrift store furniture, postcards, vintage ads to classic cars and architecture. The materials gathered in various places become another source of inspiration based on their color, texture and age. The fun part is to find materials (new, used or discarded overstock) and to find a suitable place for them in a bag.
Peggy doesn’t consider herself a fashionista but more of a problem solver, approaching design as a technical challenge, making sure that “Fun” is also functional and practical.
Always thinking about how a bag can be constructed, shaped, carried, made stronger, but also how a bag can be different and what a bag can project.
Because Peggy prefers to be in control over the entire production process, she continues to make each bag one at a time, starting with her own patterns and raw materials. This allows for quality control and last minute changes that become part of the design.
The name Sausburg is a combination of two different cities: Sausalito, California where Peggy currently lives and works and Tilburg, the Netherlands her birthplace and source of many materials that she collects during family visits.
